How does anaerobic digestion work?

Understand, follow and master anaerobic digestion.

A reference site for professionals, with a clear, hands-on guide for everyone else: processes, regulation, reading list and international news in one place.

For everyone

We are all waste producers.

Peelings, leftovers, lawn clippings, manure, sludge, canteen and food-industry waste: every day, households, farmers, shops and factories all produce organic matter. Thrown away, it pollutes and releases methane. Digested, it becomes a resource.

The loop closes: the fields grow food, and food waste comes back to the digester.

At home

My bin is a resource

In France, sorting food waste at source is required for everyone since 2024. Collected separately, it can be digested instead of being burnt or buried.

On the farm

Manure and residues, put to work

Farm digesters turn livestock effluents and crop residues into energy, while keeping their fertilising value in the digestate.

In industry

Waste becomes a local energy source

Food factories, canteens and treatment plants send their organic waste to digesters close to where it is produced.
